Make a smart request, the Lord looks at the heart

King 3 tells us of the request that was made by king Solomon. In this passage, Solomon was honest with God, as we see in verse 7 where he was acknowledging the position God gave him of succeeding his father, David to be the king, however, he indicated his insecurities that he didn't know how to rule this great nation that the Lord has given him to rule. He then asked for wisdom. The response from God shows us that God truly listens and He also looks at our heart, on the things we ask for. For example, verse 10 tells us that the Lord was pleased with what Solomon asked for, which was not a selfish request, such as long life, riches for self or the death of his enemies (verse 11). Instead of just granting him what he asked for, which is wisdom, God gave Him more. In verse 12 to 14 indicates that: "I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be. Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for—both wealth and honor—so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings. And if you walk in obedience to me and keep my decrees and commands as David your father did, I will give you a long life.” Wow, amazing. God gives him what he asked for and more.

This confirms the request we've been given in Matthew 6:33 that says: "But seek first His kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." Here we are tasked to seek God's will above our own, to seek what the will of God is, for our lives. In the case of king Solomon, he seek the kingdom of God as his request was based on getting the tools he'll need to deliver on the assignment that God gave him, of leading the nation of Israel. By so doing, God was pleased with that and that's when He gave him more than what he asked. Tying with the verse in Ephesians 3:20 that says: “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever." We serve an amazing Father who wants our desires to tie with His will, then He will give us the things that we need as well.

As we make our requests to God, may we consider this example and align our needs with the will of God, He will provide the rest of the things we need. Amen.
