The Lord is our doorkeeper
A concept that we might find hard to accept, but it is true, God is our door keeper. This means He controls the doors that opens and those that shuts in our lives. Sometimes we can see an opportunity that we might think is lucrative and is meant for us, but only to find that it might not end well at some point. In that case, God closes such doors; painful as it may be, but we ought to accept, as we might not know what God is protecting us from. However be assured that God does open doors as well, should He decide that a particular opportunity belongs to you, it doesn't matter who thinks you don't deserve it, or don't qualify for it, He will orchestrate things to favor you.
Ecclesiastes 9:11 says: "I have seen something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all. " Thus, when things seems pear-shaped, we need to believe that even in that situation, God is still in control. I was taught that when you find yourself in the wilderness, you must know either God wants to teach you something, wants to strengthen you or to prepare you for something. Remember God prepares us by allowing us to go through the circumstances that will strengthen whichever character He is building in us. Our job is to embrace the process, not fight it but allow it to bring out the best in us. Ecclesiastes 3:1 says: "Everything that happens in this world happens at the time God chooses". Never too late, never too early.
