The Holy Spirit our Helper

 John 20:19-22

"On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” After He said this, He showed them His hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” And with that He breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit..."

This happened after Jesus had resurrected and His disciples had not seen Him since. The first words that came out of Jesus' mouth was "peace be with you". Jesus understood the state His disciples were in, after what had happened with the crucifiction of their Lord and the fear of them being next in line. Also the fear of having lost their great Shepherd. The bible tells us that Jesus is the great Shepherd, that lays down His life for His sheep, who is willing to leave the ninety nine sheep and go look for the one sheep that got lost. How kind and compassionate is that. We can imagine how safe and protected the disciples felt whenever they were around Christ, sadly He died (and rose again). This must have created anxiety in their hearts; hence the words Jesus spoke.

The second part of the bible verse tells us that Jesus breathed on them and instructed them to receive the Holy Spirit. This is the second act which shows Jesus in this passage bringing comfort unto them. Remember we are told that the Holy Spirit is our Comforter, our Helper, our Advocate, our Counselor, our Teacher who will remind us of all things Jesus said to us (John 14:26). Thus, we need not be afraid. That must have been comforting for the disciples and it sure is comforting for us today.

Therefore, acknowledge Him in all your ways, and He will be your help in time of trouble.
