What God says about raising children

Ephesians 6:1-4

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.  “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

This verse is loaded with instructions for both children and their parents. The first part of the verse deals with the commandment for children in respect to their parents. This is one of the verses I've learnt of since I was young; for children to respect their parents so that they may live long. it is true, this brings favour of God. The second part of the verse deals with the parents, that they must not provoke their children to the point of anger, but emphasis is placed on raising up the children with discipline and instruction of the Lord. This means as parents, we need to instill the values of Christ, teaching them about Jesus and how He has set an example for us to follow. I believe this will lead to more peace and better approach for the children, in dealing with the pressures of life. To teach them at an early age that God does not want us to carry the burden of worry, being anxious about everything, but to always surrender to Him. A huge weight will be lifted off their shoulders. They'll have a good attitude towards challenges, not to allow them consume them, but to  always remember that they are not alone, not matter what, God will work it all out for their good (Romans 8:28).

I've also learnt that our children do what their parents do, so the closer you bring yourself to Christ, the more they will adopt your approach. What better way to lead them to the Light of the world? Therefore, let us pray for wisdom to be good parents, ones that are pleasing to God. Parents that will show their children the way that is pleasing to God.
