Sowing on good soil may yield a 100-fold!
Matthew 13:1-9
That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. Then he told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. Whoever has ears, let them hear.”
This parable was told by Jesus as a teaching to the people that were there. If you read further down, in this chapter, from verse 18, Jesus explains this parable. This is about sowing on different types of soil. An example is made that where the seed fell randomly on the ground, the birds may eat up that seed and it's gone. Or sowing on rocky places, where there's not enough soil/water for it to grow well, it may struggle to grow due to harsh conditions. Whilst for seeds that fall on thorny areas, they'll choke up as they compete for nutrients with the weeds. However, seeds that fell on good soil, will yield good crop, with harvest that is 100, 60, or 30 fold.
This is a good example, where we may reflect on ourselves, when we receive the word of good, do we allow the circumstances around us to steal the word (by cancelling what you received and lose faith), or do we let harsh conditions dry it up that it disappears and doesn't achieve what it was meant to or are we good soil, where we allow the word to build us up, and become nutrients for our soul? Also we can look at it on a different light, where we ask ourselves are we sowing in good soil or just randomly where we might not get any returns? If you sow in the kingdom of God, best believe that God sees that and it will make an impact on someone. He is a rewarder....This could be in any form, through your gifts and talents, the word- sharing the gospel (the good news), through giving etc. For example, giving someone money to buy drugs, that cannot be sowing on good soil, because that is actually enabling the negative impact of the drugs on that person's life.
So, choose wisely where you sow, through your time, money, talents, gifts, skills etc. Be a blessing, that's what we are called to be.
