A caution about the word of God, do what it says...

 James 1:22-24

But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like.

God wants us to be obedient to His word. His word is life and it is final. The word of God is captured in the bible, more like a manual that is there to help us maneuver this life thing. Life can be complex, with all other people around us with their characters and motives, which is why the bible is there to guide us through (read the book of Proverbs). I've learned that everything is in the bible, whatever question or thing that you may not be sure of, I'm certain it is captured in the bible somewhere. The trick about understanding and enjoying the word, is that you need the Holy Spirit to interpret it for you. In our own minds, we cannot understand or grasp the lessons that are there for us. As Jesus said when He was about to ascend that He is not leaving us alone, but He will send someone who will be our Guide, our Helper, our Comforter. Which is why when we entered the kingdom of light, the Lord blessed us with the Holy Spirit who is there to help us.

Therefore, it is no use to read the word and not do what it says. God gave us instructions for our benefit, so that we may live a life that is pleasing to Him and allow us to live in eternity. If we don't apply what He tells us, then it is of no use. It's like God is giving us gifts and placing them on the table, until we grab them, open and enjoy them, they remain there, of no use. It is in our best interest to know what His word says, and then apply what it says. For example, if God says we are healed by the stripes Jesus endured on the cross (Isaiah 53:5) and yet we don't accept and confess that, then His word is of no use to us. So, let us be obedient to God's word and be the doers of the word, not just hearers.
