We don't live off bread only, but by the living word of God!

 Matthew 4:4

But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Jesus was emphasizing the importance of His word, being part of our life. So much that we can't live without it, just like the actual food we eat. I never understood or appreciated what this verse meant, until I was drawn in, to God's presence and the Holy Spirit started making the bible make sense to me. Before, reading the bible was an ordinary thing to do, where I used to enjoy hearing of the bible stories etc. However, there came a time when I started understanding the truth about the word of God, which is not just about their story (eg Moses, Job etc.) but a point where I recognized that these are meant to be stories that we can identify with, learn from and get the assurance that if God was able to do it for them, He certainly can do it for me! This is one aspect of it.

The second aspect of this, is actually what Jesus was specifically referring to, when He said these words. Few verses before this one, we see Jesus interacting with Satan, who was tempting Him. He said let Jesus tell the stones to turn into bread, so that He can eat, as He was fasting. The verse above, is the response that Jesus gave him that man shall not live by actual food only, but by every word that comes out of God's mouth. How true was that! Having developed a routine to fast and pray, I can safely say indeed we can live off the word of God. Yes, as humans we need food for energy, but what this scripture seeks to teach us, is that if we set out mind to doing something, we can do it and go beyond the expected. Meaning, for the course that we have in our hearts, which is leading us to fast, we can starve ourselves and just focus on that which we have set ourselves to achieve. By so doing, you would've conquered the enemy who would want you to remain in the physical and not take your fight in the spirit.

Jesus came to be our Leader and if He defeated the grave, then victory is ours!
